train to Chicago

this train was originally scheduled to depart at 7.50p, but we didn't start rolling out of the train station until 11.30p. talk about pain!

I learned a lot about alex. he has a fairly new girlfriend and is beginning a masters program in urban development in september. he is so close to the end of his trip: from Massachusetts, south through new England, then to Seattle, Portland, Denver, and back through to new England. his trip seems to have been motivated by weddings.
after we chatted for another hour or so on the train, I slept. well, I "slept". let's just say that even though I slept for 12hrs, I felt like I'd slept just 8 hrs. that's life on a train where "sleep" goes hand in hand with interruption and back pain.

Alex and I watched Superbad on his Ubuntu-running Dell. we talked about travelling, Chicago, and xkcd (broaden yr world right now at xkcd.com). we were able to disembark the train, finally, at 7.15pm local time.

we said goodbye at baggage claim and I went to reclaim the man I truly wanted to see.... Scott. Chicago baggage claim staff wouldn't hold my box in any way, shape, or form. so I guess I will have to buy a box on this trip afterall.

I allowed google maps to direct me to the hostel. after a rather lovely and uneventful 4 miles, I have arrived. I'm so proud of myself for finally finding a working position for my two bags to stack on my back. I'd really like to get a picture of it, really.

I got all checked in and surveyed the hostel - this place is huge. much bigger than the hostel I stayed in in Chelsea with Annette some three years ago. even though I was, and am, kind of hungry, I've decided to put off grocery shopping until tomorrow so I'm not limited to 24 hour markets. After a shower that brought me back to freshman year in college, I called to say goodnight to Kalman and am now tucked into my bed of cush-less mattress, thin sheets, and bright communal spaces.

goodnight!
